Genius: the misnomer.

The Guy and I have a constant struggle to find music that both of us will listen to.  He leans towards what I call Angry Boy Music, while I listen to Depressing Girl Music.  We have managed to agree on 90s rock and a little bit of current pop.

It makes car rides interesting.  And often, repetitive.

I was pleased when I figured out my iPod had the Genius option.  I pick a song we both love and Genius gets us a list of 25 songs we can listen to.  But for one or two songs we have to skip, it works out well for us.

This last trip, I threw on the Genius and we were doing well.  Some Nirvana, Our Lady Peace, Metallica, etc.  It was a bevy of heavier rock.  Then suddenly, out of no where: Beach Boys I Get Around.

I have to say, I was not expecting that.

********************************************

Later on in the drive, we were listening to a mix of oldies and current music.  A couple of songs came on and I was stoked because I had just been thinking about them both.  I excitedly explained to The Guy that Genius was reading my mind.

His response?

They probably shouldn't call it Genius then.

He should be home any time now.

Now that's edgy

My coworker lamented that her daughter was dating someone less than desirable.  In my empathy, we got talking about the men we dated as young people versus who we want to be with as an adult.

When I was younger, I dated men who were emotionally damaged or distant, and often who were without work.  I was attracted to men who were troubled, uneasy, and often unkind.  My coworker said the same.  She only looked for men who were "edgy".  It was not until we were older (and hopefully more mature) that we looked for men who were stable, loving, kind, and consistent.

I laughed saying that 10 years ago I wouldn't have thought I'd end up with someone like The Guy.  He's straight-laced, honest, hard-working, kind, sincere, gentle, patient, tidy!, and employed!  I chuckled that he isn't the "bad guy" type that I always fawned over and yet I couldn't be more happy with him.

It was at that moment he chose to text me to say goodnight.

At 7:45pm.

Yup, he's a wild one.

Anchor -- Four years of love

Four years ago in February, I was sitting alone in my house.  I had three dogs, two sisters, and no direction.  I realized that the men I had dated were not what was good for me and I was going to have to do something differently if I wanted to change that.  I signed up for Lava Life the next day.

I knew if I didn't, I was going to live in the spinster house forever.

After chatting with a few different people, I ran across Woodrow (later know to you as The Guy).  His comments were witty, his grammar decent and his picture flattering.  We decided to meet for coffee to see if the online matched with the real life.

Here is an account of our first date.

Thankfully, we continued to see each other.  Each date was better than the last.  Although, there was a brief hiccup when a friend teased me about our upcoming third date so much I got a migraine from the worry that The Guy would be angry if I didn't put out.  (Just so you know: I didn't and he wasn't.)

It was our fifth date that I knew I was done for.  We walked across the room and he gently rested his hand on my lower back.  Right then, I was caught.  The thought of being without him was more than I could bear, so I knew I had to keep him.

I'm so very glad I did.

He has become my court jester, my champion, my mind reader, my best friend.

Now, if only he'd be my Sugar Daddy too.

Uxorious -- My baby loves me

This word was provided to me by Janny.

Tonight, I came home after a nine day absence.  Nine days spent with my little Grandma as she moved from her apartment to her new home.  Nine days without each other.

When I opened the garage door, I was surprised not to see The Guy waiting for me.  He had been asking quite regularly where I was on the road, so I assumed he was as anxious as I to have me home.  I unloaded a few things and opened the door.  There he was.

Do you remember what I look like?

Vaguely.

After hugging long enough the dog got bored, I brought my things inside.  Once in the kitchen, I could hear a sound.

Water running.

The Guy had drawn me a bath (not with a pen and paper -- why do they call it that?  Oh, drawing from a well.  I get it.) and poured us each a glass of wine.

It was the perfect home coming to a hectic nine days.

I promise, I will never leave you this long again.

Until next week.
*****************************
Tonight, talking with my favourite, underrated cousin, he asked me about my relationship with The Guy.  I was taken aback by the question, because -- although I try not to take us for granted -- I hadn't thought about it for awhile.  Here is what I wrote.
We are different in a lot of ways. I'm a mess -- emotionally, lifestyle wise, and housekeeping. He is incredibly sturdy and neat. He can calm me down and I do the same when he gets worked up. He's also weird enough that I let my freak flag fly without being too self-conscious.
We are also similar in some ways -- super determined to take care of our family, caregivers, fixers, etc. We also both like real life crime shows! So we compliment each other both in our difference and similarities.
For me the most important this is that we've both become better people because of each other and that is the first time it's been like that for either of us. I like who I am with him a lot better than I've ever liked me before.

I'm so glad to be home.

Oh, right... Valentine's day

Last night, I came home to fresh flowers on the counter and supper being delivered to the door.  I was jubilant.  I'd had a rough night the evening before worrying about some family issues and hadn't slept much.  I figured The Guy had tuned into my emotional distress and wanted to do something nice for me.

I gushed over the flowers and was very happy with supper.  We watched the rest of the season of a show we've been watching and chatted before bed.  All in all, a great evening.

It wasn't until this morning I realized he had likely done all those nice things for Valentine's Day and NOT because he was in tune with my every emotional need.

He still gets bonus points, but not as many as I'd thought.

John Tesh says Facebook is ruining my marriage

Anyone who knows anything about me knows I love me some John Tesh. Not only is he brilliant and knows everything, but he's super insightful regarding life.

Tonight, on my way home, I was listening again to my dear John as I am apt to do when wandering out in the world in the evening.  He was being all intelligent for my life and then he said something that made me stop.

Not the car, that would just be silly.  I stopped to think.  But not the car.  I kept driving.  I had pizza (GF!) and it would have gotten cold.

What John Tesh said made me think about what my life has become.  He said this: Facebook is ruining your marriage.

But... but... John!  It can't be true.  It just can't!  Why would you say something so hateful?

Don't worry.  He went on to explain.

He said that Facebook statuses are "removing all the mystery" between partners.  And then, he recommended UNFRIENDING your spouse.

Now, I admit that I update a lot.  I can't help it.  I have thoughts.  Funny thoughts.  Strange thoughts.  Gross thoughts.  And these thoughts need to be shared with others.  Like I said to a friend the other day: I cannot be the only one who is stuck with these things inside her head.  Not only do I have thoughts, but I have stories.  Ones that include my partner and how ridiculous he is.

Yet, I can see where John is coming from.  I mean, the mystery is gone.  If The Guy had been fooled into thinking girls don't fart, that was ruined with this update: You know it's bad when the smell makes even the dog leave the room.  However, he reciprocates with the lack of mystery by updating my statuses for me when I forget to log out.  (i.e.: My butt smells. -- Thanks honey. My friends thought that was a RIOT.)

Yet, I try to be conscious about not airing our dirty laundry on Facebook or Twitter for that matter.  (Except for the discussion about Dutch Ovens.  That's just begging to be shared.)  I don't ever want to be passive-aggressively fighting on FB about something that's private.  We can do that in person.

But then, when I was starting to question my dear John's intelligence, I remembered something he said earlier about being happy in life.  I remember how much I appreciate my husband and how he makes things all good.  And when I questioned him about Facebook, he agreed that (perhaps) this time John might have been off base.

At least, that's what I'm updating my status to right now.

Burnt offerings: the first meal I cooked for The Guy

I read something (likely in a medical journal*) where it said that the first meal that is prepared by one partner for their significant other sets the tone for their entire relationship.

This cannot be good.

After I was settled into my new house the summer I started dating The Guy, I invited him over for supper.  I thought it would be the perfect first meal -- simple, manly, not too many vegetables.  I had fresh steak (bought from a friend's husband who grows cows), garden potatoes (not my garden) and corn on the cob.

I fired up the barbeque -- confident in my capabilities as an independent woman! -- and got everything ready to cook.  I wrapped up the potatoes (sliced thinly and covered in spices) and corn in foil and got them ready for the fire.  Everything was going smoothly.

It was a really hot summer.  Like old people dying in the shade hot summer.  My little house with no air-conditioning was not going to work for dinner.  So, I set up for a romantic dinner outside.  Plastic chairs, an old table from my mom's sewing room, and my finest dinnerware.  It was crass, but there was a breeze.  I put on a flirty little dress and waited for my company to arrive.

The Guy arrived in perfect timing.  He brought me flowers (I think, but can't remember.  It sounds good though, right?) and commented on my dress.  Everything was going as planned.

That's when I smelled smoke.

I ran out to the barbeque and found most of the steaks in flames.  The handy spray water bottle I kept beside the barbeque just for times like this was put to use and the steaks were salvageable.  Much like my mother's rule, fire meant supper was done!

As we sat down for supper, The Guy sawing into his burned steak and grinning madly, I knew he was one I was going to have to keep.

Especially because he still had that grin when we found out the potatoes were still raw.

* We have a friend who tells us about things she's read.  Her defense has often been that she read it in a medical journal.  Thus, it is fact.  Thus, we tease her mercilessly.

Wisdom and folly #reverb10

December 10 Wisdom. What was the wisest decision you made this year, and how did it play out? (prompt by @photobird)

I'm a day late on this one.  Well, technically 40 minutes.  If I were in BC, this would be right on time.

Why yes, I am postponing having to answer this topic.

This year, I didn't feel very wise.  I felt as though I knew very little and, the more I learned, the less I knew.  Today, especially, I have felt the opposite of wise, so this makes me feel like I've never been wise in my life.

However, as I go through my year (which Reverb10 is intent on making me do) I realize I have made decisions and, some of them, they were good!  Call it wisdom, folly, or luck of the draw, I had some decisions that turned out for the best.

Each decision led to circumstances that enabled me to make other decisions or discoveries I would have otherwise missed.  I am sure, after this month is over, you will be tired of hearing about these things because my year has been about the same few things over and over and over again.

In February, I decided to go see my sister for Valentine's Day instead of spending my first married V-day with my husband.  Seems like a bad idea, yes, but turns out it was a good decision.  That decision led me to be there for  the discovery of her Celiac's disease and to realize that it might be mine too.

In June, I decided to go on my first trip to Europe.  BY. MYSELF.  Okay, yes, it was to see my Dad, but I was going by myself first and then meeting up with him.  This decision led to a great deal of panic and terror, but it also led to self-realization that I could do it.  I could travel across the world.  And that led me to see where my Dad lives and to meet his new (and my new extended) family.  That was worth every minute.

I decided it was time to go through all the stuff I had in storage and in boxes that belonged to members of my family and had not been opened for years.  It resulted in a great deal of work, but led to gems of terrible pictures, fantastic "heirlooms" and hilarious pieces of my past.

I also decided to open an Etsy shop for all my knitted goods.  I had been knitting and knitting since February when Ky taught me and had a ton of product sitting around my house.  I opened a shop and sold quite a few items.  It's not enough to actually be worth any money, but it has allowed me to be able to buy more knitting supplies!!

Last, but not least, my most wise decision has been one I have made every day for a year.  To appreciate every minute of being married to The Guy.  Yes, even the minutes when he tickles me until I want to pee and the ones that weren't full of laughter.  So, at least once a day, when I decide to love the goofy, wonderful man that he is -- I am wise.

The wonder that is love #reverb10

December 4 Wonder. How did you cultivate a sense of wonder in your life this year? (prompt by@JeffreyDavis108)

My sense of wonder.  This was a frustrating beginning to my day.  I woke up in a mood (you try waking up at 7am on a Saturday and be in a good mood) and the only "wonder" I could think of was more a sense of astonishment and/or incredulity.  I had to really think about what wonder meant and what it meant to me.

Here is finally what got me.  The dictionary.  Wonder: to be filled with admiration, amazement, or awe.

This year, for me, what has filled me with wonder is being married.

This is the point where all my family pretends to gag and clicks back to Facebook.

But that's what it is.  I've written about it here and here.  The wonder that is being married.  It's what has been keeping me going these last few months when things at work have been difficult to face.  I will quite regularly find myself just looking at The Guy and being so thankful for him and for our relationship.

I am keeping my wonder -- which is trying to slip through my fingers each time I turn around -- by remembering that: being in love, being with The Guy, being where I am is a wondrous place.

I'm not old!

As I sat at the counter today, going through my new knitting magazine, I oohed and aahed and squealed.  The Guy was busy making supper and just shook his head as every new page made me happier and happier.

Finally, he said "I would say you're like a kid in a candy store, but you're more like an old lady in a knitting store."

*sigh*

And then, Your Honour, I stabbed him.

Why we don't have nice things

The other week I was looking online and found the greatest pictures of a tea cup pig in rubber boots.  (Side note: you should read the story, it's too adorable.)  Then, we were watching reruns of HIMYM and they had a tea cup pig to help Barney pick up women and to help Lily learn to say no to cute things.

I turned to The Guy and said "Can we have a Tea Cup pig?"

He grinned and replied "Mmmm. Tea Cup bacon. So tiny, yet so delicious."

Warning labels

Since I've been diagnosed with Celiac disease and have to stay away from all things gluten, The Guy has been vigilant in trying to protect me.  He has also been using my new found diagnosis as a way to dissuade me from eating things he wants to keep for himself.

He's been behaving a lot like the guy from the Oatmeal Crisp commercial (but you won't like it) by telling me that my favourite things (which I know to be gluten free) are actually full of gluten.

This is what I discovered in the fridge when I went to grab a snack of Baby Bell cheese.

Real conversations between me and The Guy

I was at a meeting today.  When I looked up, I saw the most hideous, but awesome, piece of art work ever.  I quickly took a picture and sent it to The Guy via email entitled: New Decor.

Me: I want this for our house.
Hand carved cow head.  Awesome.

The Guy: It goes above the bed.

I believe, my friends, we have a deal.

When it's love

Often, The Guy will catch me watching him.  It makes him extremely uncomfortable.  He's not sure why I'm looking at him and, most the time, I'm at a loss to explain it.  But I love to watch him.

I love that I can look at my future.

It's the mundane times when I find him the most intriguing.  The times when we are working together to make supper or watching a television show or playing with the dog.  I look at each line on his face, the shape of his brow, the colour of his eyes, and I think "We're going to be old together someday."  We are each other's future.

It's awesome to behold.

Whatever happens: good things, bad fights, easy moments or hard times, whatever await us, this is the man who will be with me when we face it.   I will learn every part of him.  I will know him as well as myself.  He is part of me and, like a child discovering his own toes, I am facinated with him.

So, sometimes I stare.

Those damn carrots. They're the instigators.

I was cleaning up the counter after having cut up some broccoli for lunch.  I don't know how broccoli does it.  One cut and there are a thousand little pods of broccolis everywhere.

Me [grumbling]: "Stupid broccoli.  Miracle food, my ass.  If it was miracle food, it would clean up after itself."
The Guy: Yeah, and it wouldn't taste like broccoli.
Me: You love broccoli.
The Guy: [bletch]
Me: Fine.  Get yourself some carrots.
The Guy: Don't even get me started on carrots.

Even married, I'm alone on V-day

This year marks my first Valentine's Day as a married woman.  And where am I?  Not with my husband.  Typical.

We're not much for the Valentine's Day celebrations.  For us, every day is a day to express our love.

VOMIT.

I got the chance to go see my sister over this week and, when I discussed the chance with The Guy, I asked him if he would mind me not being around for the most romantic of days.  He stood up and cheered at the thought of a whole week alone.  So, I guess we're okay.  I'm here, having a wonderful time, and he is home basking in the laziness it is to not have to clean up after me.

I decided, as my gift to him, I would write a list of things I love about him.  You can read it, or you can carry on. I won't be offended either way.

  1. The lines on his face are from smiling.
  2. I catch him having silly discussions with the dog.
  3. He tickles me "out of love".
  4. He's very tall.
  5. He's the perfect hug height.
  6. I can wear heels and still be shorter than he is. (Did I mention he's tall?)
  7. He barbeques almost anything.  Even in winter. Although, not this winter.
  8. He doesn't make me shovel.
  9. He creates his own heat and doesn't complain too loudly when I steal it.
  10. I can make him laugh
  11. He will make me laugh when I'm trying to be grouchy
  12. Even when he is mad, he doesn't get MAD.
  13. He lets me sleep in and stay up late.
  14. I can be silly around him and not be self-conscious.

That is what you get for being mean to a puppy

[Scene: The Guy, the dog Monty and MayB sitting on the couch.  Monty is happily chewing on his toy rope.  The Guy leans over nonchalantly and steals the rope from Monty.  Trouble is brewing.]

The Guy: Ha! I have your rope.  What are you going to do about it?  Huh?
Monty: ... [stands up, eyes rope, and jumps squarely onto The Guy's junk.]
The Guy: Gak! [folds in half and moans]
Monty: ... [takes rope from The Guy's limp fingers, turns around, and sits back down.]
Me (MayB): I think he won that round.

[End Scene.]

****************************************************
[Scene: MayB is in bed having just woken up from sleeping the day away after a night shift.  Monty is perched next to her, with his head on The Guy's pillow.  The Guy walks in and sees that MayB is awake.]

The Guy [to MayB]: Sleepy.
The Guy [to Monty]: Stinky.
MayB: And you?  What are you?
The Guy: Sexy.
MayB: ...
The Guy: Well, just be grateful I didn't call you "Stinky".

[Flash forward to The Guy sleeping on the couch.]

Time Shifters

The Guy and I live in different time zones.

In the same house.

Our shifts are as different as night and day.  Literally.  Before we got married, I was normally up until 2am and slept til noon.  He was up at 3am and worked til one.  Our schedules are still opposite -- I work three weeks of evening or night shifts and he works all early mornings -- but we've worked out a schedule.  When we're working, it works for us.

We just don't see each other.  We don't get to share things that most couples consider normal.  Like bed time.

The first week we were married, I tried to go to bed at the same time as The Guy.  We had been encouraged by numerous couples to do so -- the mentioned how important it was for them.  They explained how much it would mean to us too.  And they were right -- bed time ritual is some of the best bonding time.  We talked about our day all snuggled together.  We played with the dog and made plans for the next day.  I loved it.

However, there was a few major problems with this plan.  I couldn't go to sleep right away. I tossed and turned, or I read.  I kept The Guy awake.  The Guy who gets little enough sleep as it is.  So, I let him go to bed when he was tired, and I started to go in later.  It is working for us.  I get some night alone time (which I love) and he gets some sleep (which he loves).  It works for us.

Our difference is only really noticeable when we're both on holidays.  This week, on our romantic getaway, The Guy was snoozing by 6:30pm while I watched reruns of NCIS.

It was a special time.

Giant nightgowns and baby corn

This Christmas, my MiL got me a night gown.  Now, you wouldn't think this would be an optimum gift to get your DiL on her first Christmas as a married woman.  Nightwear from a MiL?  Inappropriate!!!  But this night gown is AWESOME.

First, it has black and white stripes.  Tiny stripes, like Where's Waldo? books.  With red piping and little red buttons.  Second, it is full length.  From neck to mid-calf, this bad boy covers EVERYTHING.  Third, it is huge.  Like... my Dad could wear it*.  And finally, it came with matching red fuzzy socks.

There was nothing about this I didn't like.  It looked so comfy I wanted to crawl into it right there.  Mind you, I had about 3 hours sleep at this point having gotten off the night shift that morning, so comfort and sleep were the only things I was looking for.  But I knew this night gown was getting put on the moment I walked in the door to the house.

I looked at Wade, wiggled my eyebrows suggestively and said, "It's gonna be all romance in our house tonight!"

*Okay, that was a bad picture in my head.
************************************************

I have been making marinated salads for the last two or three weeks.  It's so easy -- you put cut up veggies in a bowl, cover them in dressing, leave them for days and replenish as the salad lowers.  There are always veggies available, I will always snack on them and it is super easy.

I put in things like: cherry tomatoes, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, whole mushrooms (from a can) and baby corn (also from a can).  I liked the baby corn for awhile, but got sick of them by the second round, so found innovative ways to get rid of them.

I fed them to Monty.

The Guy rarely feeds Monty anything people food.  The Guy is disciplined.  And has no soul.  I mean.... Hi Honey!!  He often looks at me disapprovingly when I feed the dog something from the table.  But, I mean... what am I supposed to do?  Eat the crusts? YUCK.

I came home the other day to find a stain on the carpet in the living room.  It was obvious the dog had been sick, so I got the cleaners and went to town scrubbing the floor.  I thought I got it, so I didn't think of it again until the next morning.

The stain was as though I hadn't cleaned it.  So, I got the cleaning products out again and scrubbed a second time.

That evening I mentioned it to The Guy.  He acknowledged that Monty had been sick and he too had tried to clean it up but it wasn't going anywhere.  "Do you know what he was sick?" The Guy asked looking at me pointedly.  No, what?  "A baby corn.  Whole.  Un-chewed."

Oops.  No more feeding the dog.

Miscellaneous stories of me and The Guy

This week I had a run of a few accidental mishaps within a few hours and days.  I burned my arm on the stove, I tripped up the steps, I knocked over a statue under the light fixture, I bumped into the wall, I walked into the coffee table, etc.  Seriously, the list JUST. KEPT. GOING.

After only a few of these incidents occurred, The Guy looked at me and commented that I could hurt myself in a padded room.  Within moments, I got tangled in the computer cord and nearly toppled off the couch.  Now every time I hurt myself The Guy just looks at me like "See? I told you!"

He might have a point.  Of course, if he did, I would likely hurt myself on it.

******************************************************

I have to wear a mouth guard to bed.  I know, uber sexy.  But, I grind my teeth like a mofo, so I have to do something for fear I either a) break a tooth in my sleep or b) grind them down to nothing and start chewing on my own gums.  I pop the mouth guard in at night just before I'm going to sleep.

Sometimes, I will pop it in before The Guy is ready to sleep or when he can't go back to sleep because I've woken him up.  It is at these times that he likes to strike up conversations with me.

Let me explain.  The mouth guard makes my top lip stick out like I've been in a boxing match.  Also, it makes me lisp terribly.  The Guy thinks it is quite amusing.

One night we were chatting about Monty being dumb (don't worry, he was asleep, he didn't know) and I said something that must have contained a lot of esses, because The Guy made me repeat it numerous times before I realized he was mocking me.

Then I punched him.
