Invisi-Vicki

Vicki getting a belly rub.

It is not uncommon for my dogs to hide if they do not want to do what I want them to do. Both Madison and Vicki regularly hide when it is time for a walk if they feel they have expended quite enough energy for one day, thank you very much.

One night when I was gathering the dogs for a walk, I could not find Vicki anywhere. I called her and nothing happened. So I started the search. Her favourite hiding spot is in my room. She buries into the blankets until she looks like nothing more than a discarded item of clothing. She will stay there all day long if you let her. But, she wasn't there. I checked her favourite bed, her mother's kennel, the basement, Ky's room, the bath tub. Nothing. I called her and called her.

Rapidly growing more frustrated, I asked Ky to help me find her. Ky looked up from her computer and said, "She's right behind you." And she was. Directly behind me, standing at my feet, by the front door, looking expectantly at me. She'd been there the whole time.

I guess I forgot to look down.

Tonight, I gathered the dogs for their walk. I put their harnesses on and opened the door to leave.

I counted to make sure I had them all. One, two... and a leash. No dog. I looked around and could not find Vicki. Until I followed the leash. Attached to the harness. Attached to Vicki.

Vicki, who was trapped behind the open door.

  1. On the other hand, you could have dogs that turn into whirling dervishes at the mere suggestion of a walk. Even if they've only been home from the last walk for ten minutes.
