Silly songs

Sometimes, I just can't make out the words to songs. I listen really hard, but unless it's all enunciated (or "pro-nunciated" as a friend said this week) I have a hard time hearing. So, I do what any normal person would do. I make things up. As close as possible and most the time, I think I'm right. This started when I was very young. A church song we sang a lot, went something like this in my head "The kingdom of heaven is not meat and drink, but Rice Krispies and joy." I found out when I was about 12 that it was "righteousness, peace and joy". Oops.

I have been doing this ever since. I sing the words of my own creation unabashedly until someone points out what I am doing and I die of embarrassment. I have many examples.

Years ago when the song first came out, I sang "You are a half of a century" instead of "You are a head by a century" by the Tragically Hip. I sung this loudly and often around a true Hip fan. I am sure he wanted to stab his ear drums repeatedly.

But most recently, Lyn and I were driving up to North Battleford and listening to The Wailing Jenny's. I sang "And I don't give a pitney bows what the world thinks of me." Lyn burst out laughing. Apparently, the song is "I don't give a pit, me boys, what the world thinks of me." How does that make sense?? At least I know what a Pitney Bows is.

  1. It's "I don't give a pin, me boys". Don't start spreading rumours that I don't know lyrics.

  3. Until about 30 seconds ago I thought it was "I don't give a penny boys". I can't hear words in songs either.

(...I've been out doin' in my head)

The classic, Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze
"Excuse me while I kiss this guy"
(Excuse me while I kiss the sky)

    Guns 'n' Roses - Patience
    "Sometimes I get so candescent"
    (Sometimes I get so tense)

  7. Nope, found it already. I looked at a few things, that's about it.

  8. For years, I always thought the lyrics in Shout To The Lord was "Icing for joy" instead of "I sing for joy."

  10. Icing is usually a cause for joy though.
