This last night, the sisters and I went over to my neighbour's to enjoy great food, good conversation and an adorable baby. All of us congregated in the kitchen to stare at Baby while she ate a plastic caterpillar. A motion distracted us from the window and we all turned to look outside.
Walking down the street was a woman carrying a bag of rice on her shoulder.
Now, in an of itself, it's not overly odd. However, the bag of rice was about 50 lbs. The woman was about 90lbs. In some countries, this might be a normal occurrence. Here? Not so much. We all peered at her as she made her way down the street. Then, we all went back to our regularly scheduled staring at the baby.
An hour later, we were hanging out in the backyard talking and laughing. A few kids went by across the street, all one at a time, laughing and playing. I watched (as I normally do -- stupid social worker) to make sure an adult was with them as they were all fairly young. Who should appear, but the rice woman. She was in a different outfit and had left her purse behind, but she still had the bag of rice on her shoulder.
We figured she was either stockpiling food for a natural disaster of which we are not aware or she was taking her bag of rice for laps around the neighbourhood.
