Online etiquette

A few days or weeks ago, I wondered onto someone's blog for the second time. The first time, this person commented on my blog and I thought I would swing by to see what her blog was like. I looked around and left. Not a big deal. The second time? I read that she was a little choked I had never visited or commented. I was kind of hurt at the time, but got over it quickly. Mostly because I had been there and I don't often comment when I have nothing to say because I find that more irritating than front wedgie.

So here is my question. Do you feel obligated to look at people's blogs when they comment? If you do, do you comment back so their feelings won't be hurt? Do you go back to the blog regularly in some odd sense of responsibility? Or does it matter?

These are my thoughts on the whole thing.
One: I go check out when people comment. Sometimes I check when they comment on other people's blogs - not just mine. I look around. I see if I am interested or amused. And I go back if I am.
Two: I rarely leave comments unless I have something funny or interesting or intelligent to add. And I try not to be crushed when people don't comment on mine or don't visit. Because in the long run - who gives a flying rat's ass? I mean, sure I wondered if I had offended Julie H when she disappeared for a few months, but it was summer and she has a life.
Three: I can only keep up with so many blogs. And so can other people. No one should base their happiness on who likes them online. I mean, online people are freaks.

No offense.

  1. 1. "more irritating than a front wedgie." Ahahahahha!

    2. I sometimes worry about my online popularity and obligation. Sometimes I will leave a comment to let the person know I'm still around and reading their blog. Usually I'll only comment when I feel I have something to contribute.

    3. I 100% agree that I'm a freak. And I feel like my blogger friends are freaks, too. And I know they don't judge me for it. Ditch the needy girl.

  2. Usually I check someone's profile out of curiosity as to who they are. But I agree with you; unless I have something of value to contribute, I'm not going to comment on someone's blog just because they said hi on mine. That's like feeling forced to compliment someone because they've complimented you. It's not really a true compliment if you're doing it out of obligation.

  3. I usually visit/comment when a new commenter shows up on my blog. BUT, I am not famous like you. 86 visitors per day? You can't read 86 blogs every day? Wait, that wasn't supposed to be a question. You CAN'T read 86 blogs a day (let alone comment on them).

Your honor, we find the defendant, not guilty.

  4. Have I mentioned that you're all my favourites?

  5. So, I'm not fishing for an addition into being among may-b's "favourites"...

But I'm right there with you. I used to leave comments on other people's blogs when they commented on mine, but seriously? Way too much time and effort. And the comment ends up more being like "Hi! Thanks for the nice comment on my blog!" Eeek.

So, do I count as freaky online people or freaky real-life people? Because, seriously may-b? The people you know in real life are freaks. Just look at us!

P.S. I'm anxious to hear some may-b perspective on the upcoming wedding. Good times.

  6. Mary, you are one of my favourites. I can't wait til you come home.

You are both, freaky online and in real-life. As am I.

Also... wedding update... it will come, but I'm not sure how to process it, yet. Saturday is coming quicker than I expected.

  7. These are my thoughts, I mean at least I think they are, some of it sounds vaguely familiar to me like deja vu or something:

One: I go check out when people comment. Sometimes I check when they comment on other people's blogs - not just mine. I look around. I see if I am interested or amused. And I go back if I am.

Two: I usually leave comments even if I don't have anything funny or interesting or intelligent to add. And I am not ever crushed when people don't comment on mine or don't visit. Because in the long run - who gives a flying rat's ass?

Three: I can only keep up with so many blogs. And so can other people. No one should base their happiness on who likes them online. I mean, online people are freaks.

  8. That's so funny! I was never offended, if anything, too lazy to comment, or, like you, I didn't have anything funny, intelligent etc to add. I love reading your blog, but sometimes I'm not in the mood to talk back. Blogging is not like instant messaging.

I'm also a turbo-lurker. QoWP has so many links to so many interesting blogs, but I don't know any of these people, so I just read, have a chuckle, comment ONLY if I think I may have something insightful/helpful to say, then I go on my way. End of story. If they go to my blog, good for them. I don't go there very often, so they'll probably get pretty bored. Meh... Plus, I rarely even look at what people are saying in my comments. And, unless its mean, I don't really care.
