It's not cooties

I went to the doctor today. Finally. A friend had to yell at me first, but I was planning to go eventually anyways. I went into her office, hacked up a lung, and was diagnosed with bronchitis, sinus infection, ear infection and a fever.

Or, The Plague.

Seriously. I have never been as sick in my entire life as I have been in the last year and a half. Know who I blame? The Guy. That's right. The Guy. He is always sick and has passed on his mutant sinus infection bugs to me. I've had 6 sinus infections in a year and a half. After a whole life time of not having them. See? That's science. And you can't argue with science.

I went to the store to get my meds and decided it was time to try the Neti Pot. My doctor figures the reason I keep getting infected is that my sinuses never really clear. Alrighty then. It's going to be mass evacuation.

Now, my cousins QoWP and TeacherLady have been raving about these pots for awhile. While I am sure they are honest in their opinions, I was still not really looking forward to the experience.

I brought the pot home, read the instructions and opened up the kit. It's a tiny little tea pot with a bunch of salt solutions they want me to POUR DIRECTLY INTO MY NOSE. I'm sorry, but have you ever accidentally coughed fluid through your nose? IT HURTS. And salt fluid? I imagine that is going to hurt even more.

I had to steel myself up before I could do it. Gave myself a pep-talk. I wish I had talked to Ky first, because she suggested playing the Rocky song and doing air punches first. That might have helped.

I put the pot to my nose and poured. I almost drowned. Apparently, you can't be too far tilty the wrong way because it will pour down your throat and kill you. I do not want to be found on the floor in my bathroom with a tea pot up my nose. It just lacks dignity.

Eventually, I figured it out and it was fine. No mass evacuation or anything, but it wasn't horrible. I didn't see a vast improvement, but I may have been holding it to too high standards. I expected my sinuses to clear out while a song from the Heavens rang in the background. No such luck.

I'm off to try it again. Really, I couldn't feel any worse.

  2. I'm really sorry your sick, but OMG is that funny "I do not want to be found on the floor in my bathroom with a tea pot up my nose" - maybe you can laugh your way to health?!

    Seriously, hope you feel better!

  3. i too have been converted to the neti pot by qwp. i found you have to remember to have warm water in it, and you have to be able to breathe out of both nostrils, or it just doesn't go through. also, make sure no one is around, and don't look in the mirror, cause stuff does come out and it is rather gross, and the whole thing is very undignified! i hope you are feeling better soon!

  4. so I'm sitting at lunch with Jessica S in North Battleford the day you girls leave & Jess was having terrible sinus pains... and somehow, I manage to be in a conversation with her and Merv Sundbo about the benefits of the neti pot... I assume that if Merv gives them a thumbs up, they can't be all that bad, eh? He was raving - it reminded me of QOWP & Teacher Lady blogs as well! :) Good luck with that whole not dying part!

    PS
my word is "obitoria" -- I thought it was fitting, right after I mention death.

  5. Hate to break it to you but a plain old saline solution (that is salt water, for you non-chemists)will give you the same results. Of course, discussing irrigation of your sinuses with saline solution has no where near the power to impress as speaking knowledgeably about neti pot.

  6. Ugh, feel better soon! I was wondering about those pots too. I am very prone to sinus infections and each time I say I'm going to try one but then I chicken out. Maybe next time...

  7. Sure blame me. Funny thing is I haven't had a sinus infection once while we have been together.

The saline does work quite well.
