Candi was the first girl I ever knew who wanted to be a doctor. From the first day I met her, she wanted to be an OB/GYN. At age 7, I had no idea what that even meant.
Candi was smart. She had giant thoughts about the world and issues before we were even old enough to know there was a world beyond our 10 block radius. She was also creative and she spent hours organizing friends into plays - most based on things like rain forests and endangered species.
We went to different high schools. She to a school that encouraged arts and drama - me to a school I was told to go to. We saw each other once during our high school career. I went to see her perform in her school's rendition of Grease. After that, we just lost touch.
This summer we met again for the first time. We sat across from each other and talked for hours. In many ways, it was like nothing had changed. Like no time had passed and we were still sitting in her room on her bed discussing which of the Coreys we liked better. We've grown into adults but still found comfort in the friendship of 20 years previous.
What is she doing? Did she become a doctor?
ReplyDeleteHey the 'Coreys' live in Vancouver!
ReplyDeleteHmmm. Corey Haim then, Corey Feldman now. Done.
ReplyDeleteOooh, you left us in such suspense. Did she become a doctor????
ReplyDeleteI had a friend who was my very best friend in Grade 2. I would love to get together with her. She is now a nurse.
ReplyDeleteCandi currently is finishing her degree in Human Rights Law. She did a 3 month stint in an orphanage in Kathmandu. Sometimes we become what we were meant to be.
